Checklist for Startups Before Commencing the Campus Recruitments

The list is simple:

1. There should be a proper job description and job specification available, for each and every post, you want to fill. The students want exact clarity about the nature of work, the content of work, the conditions of work as well as the skills they will have to deploy to perform the job. Things like location, working hours, reporting relationships, any specific skills requirements, should also be a part of the job description. Many online tools are available for writing job description. For example: O*NET OnLine (onetonline.org)

Also avoid selling dreams! Offer a "realistic job preview" and do share the hardships that will have to be faced by the candidate, during the course of the work.

If you are not sure how to price each job (i.e. how much you should pay for each job), you can use the wonderful portal: Salary in India, Salary Survey, Minimum Wage in India - Paycheck.in and find out the salaries, that are paid to different types of professionals, in India.

2. The compensation structure, like Fixed Salary, On Hand Salary, Variable Pay, CTC etc. should be 100% clear and be explained to each potential candidate. Here is one article that can help here: CTC and Bond in Jobs: Some Pros and Cons (pathikvariya.blogspot.com)

3. The business model of the company should be explained to the potential candidates. It will give them a clear idea of what will be their role, what will  be the learning opportunities, what will be the challenges, in the job ahead.

4. Give some idea about the agencies that have funded the start up. It will add to the credibility of the start up as an employer. In other words, it will position the start up as a better branded employer.

5. There is always a fear into the minds of the potential candidate that a start up may not survive. Do your homework and address this issue in the pre placement talk itself. Do share the risks that your business model comes with.

6. Here is one more article that might help: Tips to young start-ups for selecting the right candidates (pathikvariya.blogspot.com)

7. All in all, make sure that you remain very transparent in your communication to the potential candidates about what they should and should not expect in the job.
