Psychology of Ragging

Ragging is illegal. Ragging is immoral. It has no benefits. It is a menace that destroys careers, lives and self-esteems. Ragging, initially (very wrongly) viewed as something that melts the ice between the fresher and old students, has come to haunt us in many severe forms, with very serious consequences. Some people believe that the ragging continues as the victims display a behaviour, as depicted in a classical incidence, called, "The Stockholm Syndrome", in which, some victims, who were kidnapped, later developed soft corner for the kidnappers. One of the victims went on to get engaged with one of the kidnappers! Other view is that it is about 'effort justification' meaning that when a fresher is made to believe that he/she justifies her membership by going through the torture of ragging. The efforts in tolerating the ragging makes him/her qualified to continue the membership of the respective organization! The last belief is that many students, who underwent ragg

The Scientific Stress Management Series

It is one of the most written about topic, and yet, probably, is a topic, on which some of the highest number of wrong assumptions are accepted as facts by many of us around. So, I, as someone, who is pursuing his research degree in Stress Management, thought, it'd be a good idea to write a dedicated series of posts on this topic. All these posts can be viewed on:  https://lnkd.in/eNeeRRAp I know, in today's world of ChatGPT, writing is not one of the most important things to do! But then, it is something, that relieves my stress, and, so, I thought, let me keep doing it in a detached manner (nishkam karma). So, the first thing fist. Do you even 'know' whether you are stressed or not? Are you even ready to acknowledge that you have it and there could be serious consequences of that unacknowledged, and thus, unmanaged / unaddressed stress? One

Oppenheimer - Listen to What It Does Not Tell!

The recently released Hollywood blockbuster - Oppenheimer - was no less than a perfume with fresh fragrance, at least, for the Indian movie buffs. The almost 'melodramatic' presentation, with a fantastic story telling, screenplay and series of extra ordinary performances, will be remembered as one more of epic from Christopher Nolan. The film asks more questions than many other films that we see now a days. While it does pose the questions of morality of nuclear bomb types of research and their subsequent long term effects on human lives, environment and the whole ecology, it also forces us to think on some very subtle issues, which we might generally not much think about: 1. Is knowledge really power?: The protagonist, Oppenheimer, is a famous theoretical Physicist in US. Throughout the movie, we can see that, as soon as the "need" of any scientist is over, his/her "power" gets switched off! After that, if one tries to "switch on" that power, lik
