Ph.D. Entrance In India

UGC - Universities Grants Commission has decided to introduced entrance exam for Ph.D. (Doctorate of Philosophy) in all the Universities across India in all the disciplines/faculties. Hmmm....sounds interesting. Here, in this blog entry, I will try to analyze:(Disclaimer: So, needless to say, the below mentioned opinions are of my own only and they are based on my perception, rather than, any research) 1. What could have been the reasons for introducing entrance for Ph.D.? 2. What would be its impact on teachers teaching in the University systems? 3. What could be its far reaching effects in case the new system continues to exist for a long time? 4. How does it affect the UGC's NET qualification? Let us discuss them one by one. 1. What could have been the reasons for introducing entrance for Ph.D.?: The prima facie reason seems to be having a mechanism to ensure that the deserving candidates get the chance to do Ph.D. rather than those who "know" the guides! This is what...

Non Conventional Career Options for Management Students in the Turbulent Times

Non Conventional Career Options for Management Students in the Turbulent Times Wooohhh....Obama just announced one more stimulus packages for US economy amongst the news that 70,000 people got pink slips on December 26, 2008 - THE BLACK MONDAY. The difficult times have created a question mark in many of the Management Students completing their Management Degrees in a few months. There seems to be no way out. There seems to be no options. It looks like it all is dark and dark around. But, every cloud has a silver line. In these times also, if one thinks out of box, if one puts a little bit of extra effort, if one is a little bit more flexible, there are plenty of avenues that still exists. This article will try and "humbly recommend" some options. Obviously, the list I'm going to talk about is just an indicative one and not the exhaustive one. Let us just consider a few of the options: 01. Research 02. Consultancy 03. Teaching 04. Modeling 05. Journalism 06. Entrepreneursh...

A Visit to Rajasthan

Hi friends. I have not been able to post an entry for last two months now. It was a tough time rather. I was in IIMA for FDP which got over by October 4, 2008. I returned to my University on October 6, 2008. And then there has been a vacation from October 25 to November 15....a short one na! Initially, we had plan to visit South India this time, but the tour was canceled by the travel company....what the hell! But, we (me and my family) decided to hire a taxi (in desi language – QUALIS) to visit Marwar (Rajasthan, India). We started our journey on November 1 from my home town, Bhavnagar, Gujarat. We landed to Nathdwara, Rajasthan on the same day by evening. There was a heavy rush because of the Diwali vacation. We found a room- kind of a big hall- and stayed overnight therein. Wooh! We had to pay Rs. 1500/- for that one, which would be available in off-season for less than Rs. 600/-. After getting fresh, we moved out for shopping and food. We chose the hotel run by the temple trust for...

FGM & Waris-Dire: Actions inspire more than words

Waris-Dire, nam to suna hoga? (Waris Dire...You must have heard this name). Had this question been asked to me before a week, my obvious answer would have been NO. But, recently, my parents gave me an abridged translation of her autobiography - The Desert Stone. (http://www.fgmnetwork.org/articles/Waris.html) As I read through the pages, I was astonished, surprised, shocked.....each page had something special to offer. Born in 1965 in Somalia (Africa), this lady has seen a lot of ups and downs in her life and she has emerged stronger every time. My intention here is only to reflect and create awareness about FGM (Female Genital Mutilation). If, because of this blog entry, one person in any corner of the word benefits, I shall consider myself more than lucky. Waris Dirie has asked all of us to support her in her foundation website (http://www.waris-dirie-foundation.com) by creating awareness about it, donating something to her foundation, helping politicians and organizations working th...

MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE VOTING DURING THE GUJARAT ASSEMBLY ELECTION 2002-03

What happens when a child gets a new electronic toy? What happens when a college going youngster gets a bike? Something similar happened with me when I got the first voting rights! It was the last Gujarat Assembly in which I had voted for the first time. I was studying in Baroda. My hostel was of BAPS (Bochasan Vasi Shree Akshar Purushottam Sanstha)- A socio-religious organization. The saints were our guardians and we passed most of the time with them. My studies were also going on and so it was unlikely that I would come all the way to Bhavnagar for just voting! It would cost me time and the loss of studies and fair amount of money(a point which every hosteller can’t ignore!). Now, the real story starts. I was in my hostel and the next day there was my turn for voting was to follow. I was not going so naturally, I was least concerned with it. But, it was at 11 pm when one of the respected saints, Shree Balavir Swami called us! He began on a surprising node, “Who of you would like to...

An experience of a Life Time

“A shy, twenty three year old male, a fresh MBA and a lecturer in a women’s MBA college with an experience of three months!!”—this is how I’d have been introduced two year back. As a student, I’d have hardly interacted with my female classmates, but as luck would have it for me, my first job came in the form of lectureship in a women’s college whereby most of the students were just six-month to one-year older to me! And then one day, as a class teacher of the junior batch, I had to lead some sixty odd girls for an industrial visit! Although, it was a typical industrial visit that is generally held by all MBA colleges, what made it unique was the formation of people. I had to lead sixty students and I was accompanied by a fellow-lady lecturer who was also just twenty five year old. So, in short, it was a big responsibility on my young shoulders to ensure the girls reach back home safe. Our college was located in the smallest and remote district of Gujarat-AMRELI. Our visit included goin...
